Caregiver Tips
Caring for Mom or Dad? Who’s Caring for You?
If you’re the one holding everything together for an aging parent, you’re probably exhausted. Here’s how to recognize caregiver burnout — and the kind of help that gives you your life back.

If you're the one making the doctor's appointments, picking up prescriptions, cooking meals, and checking in every evening, you're doing something incredibly loving. You're also probably exhausted.
Millions of Americans care for an aging parent or relative while also working, raising kids, and keeping their own lives together. Many don't call themselves "caregivers." They just say, "That's my mother. Who else is going to do it?"
But caregiving without a break takes a toll. Here are a few signs you may be running on empty:
- 🔹 You feel tired even after you sleep.
- 🔹 You're short-tempered with people you love, and feel guilty about it afterward.
- 🔹 You've stopped doing things you used to enjoy, because there's never time.
- 🔹 You're getting sick more often, or putting off your own doctor visits.
- 🔹 You feel alone, like no one really understands what you're carrying.
If any of these sound familiar, please hear this: needing help doesn't mean you're failing. It means you're human.
What can help
Ask for specific help. "Can you sit with Dad on Saturday from 10 to 2?" gets a yes more often than "Let me know if you can help."
Protect one thing that's yours. A walk, church, a call with a friend, a standing hour that belongs only to you.
Look into respite care. Respite care means a trained caregiver steps in for a few hours, a day, or regularly each week, so you can rest, run errands, work, or just breathe. Your loved one stays safe at home, and you get your life back a little at a time.
Check what's covered. Many families don't realize that through Pennsylvania's Community HealthChoices program, in-home care may be covered for eligible seniors and adults with disabilities.
